Life-style of the community |
We live a traditional form of Dominican life. Although we do not regularly have the Traditional Rites of Mass and Office, we appreciate and try to follow all the cherished traditions of the Church and Order, insofar as they are accessible to us.
liturgy: We sing five of the Hours of the Divine office in Choir each day, using the Latin language where possible, and the traditional Dominican chant and ceremonial.
habit: Following the Dominican custom, we wear a full-length white robe with a black cincture and Rosary, a white scapular and guimp and a long black veil. For liturgical ceremonies and at certain other times, we wear a full-length black cappa (cloak).
conventual life: Our life-style is conventual (monastic). We live in common, sharing our goods, our personal gifts, our recreation, work and prayer. In our prayer-life we maintain the classical monastic practices of Mental Prayer, Lectio Divina and spiritual study. We keep a spirit of silence in the convent to create the right atmosphere for prayer and study, taking our meals in silence and observing a Profound Silence during the night hours. We maintain forms of fasting and asceticism which accord with the Church's renewed concepts of religious penance.

The sisters pray the 'De Profundis' for the Dead before processing into the Refectory. |
material life-style: We try to live a simple, poor life which is not always comfortable by the world's standards. Living on the limited stipends given us by the Church for our work in education, we share among us the household and other manual work necessary to our daily life, and we are always conscious of our dependence on the providence of God. We try to identify with the poor and to share generously what God has given us with those who have less resources and greater needs.
apostolate: Our Apostolate is chiefly in Catholic education. We only engage in part-time apostolic work, thereby remaining free to carry out the duties of the Sacred Liturgy and contemplation, and the Conventual life to which we are committed.
At present we teach part of each day in the local parish school and co-ordinate the Religious Education programme. We also offer support and assistance to Home-schooling families and find other opportunities for spreading the Gospel through writing, giving talks, editing magazines and preparing education programmes.
